Nasos
Precis: Industrial
hell through a Gothic lens.
Conspectus: An
island that is home to a foul, polluted factory city of the same
name; Nasos is ruled by a council of its wealthiest citizens, but the
middle and lower-classes frequently live under states of anarchy;
rotting compost, raw sewage, and huge mounds of trash choke the
streets; everything is coated with a thick layer of industrial grime;
the wealthy members of Nasosian socity throw frequent masquerade
balls; the upper-classes fear the diseases and contagions that run
rampant among the lower orders; the sewers of Nasos are home to dire
rats and otyughs.
Notes -- to give Nasos a bit of an update, I'd lean heavily on the Gothic Steampunk ideas found in GURPS Screampunk. Nasos already has a bit of an urban Dickensian vibe to it, why not go further and add nightmarish steamtech to the mix? Also, I really like the idea of azers who use their inner bodily infernos to power infernal steamtech devices. Furthermore, all this business about industrial filth and waste is ripe for a Nurgle-esque infestation.
I even have a soundtrack in mind for Nasos:

ReplyDeleteThe Nasos tourism bureau regrets to inform you that they will no longer need your services as a copywriter.
Story of my life.
DeleteI have 2 things going through my head here: GURPS Goblins and Bombay today. Neither of which is particularly gothic as they stand but they could be.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmm......
............in any event, this is pretty much what Delhi, Surat and Shanghai are like in my Tartary Bollymecha setting.
I own GURPS Goblins so there is definitely a possibility that I can work some of that in. And I ran a Gothic Earth adventure at the Black Hole of Calcutta, which I could probably hack for Nasos...
DeleteSo far the most interesting locale for me.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I'm not sure TSR ever really did any adventures there or anything, so it seems like a big blank slate to do something cool with.
DeleteWhere does Nasos come from? I don't see it in my copy of Realm of Terror, but I'm interested!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't tell you where it first appeared, but it is in the Domains of Dread hardback.
Deletei don't remember Nasos but i sure like Big Black
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think Nasos didn't get much play, which is a shame.
DeleteLike these Ravenloft remixes. When you finish, you should link them all on a single page.
ReplyDeleteWill do!
